Matheson’s first of season wins it for Panthers in OT

Despite outshooting the Panthers 35-29, the Wings dropped to 1-6-3 in their last nine games.

“They never took a body off him, and we could never take advantage of it,” Detroit coach Stan Van Gundy said. “He got shots for other guys, but we didn’t make any of them.”

The Pistons have lost six straight for the first time since late in the 2014-15 season.

“We’ve lost some confidence and we need to get it back,” Van Gundy said. “We knew we were going to play a month unlike anyone else in the NBA, and we started it well, but now it has gotten bad.”

The NFL on Friday issued a memo to teams disputing that claim.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that the NFL had proposed the massive funding initiative after meetings with the Players Coalition, a group of players meeting with league officials on social justice issues. Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and retired wide receiver Anquan Boldin founded that group and have led talks with the league.

But Reid and some other players walked away from the coalition this week over disagreement about how that initiative would be funded.

Jonas Valanciunas had 23 points and 15 rebounds for the Raptors, who led by 13 points in the first half. Serge Ibaka and DeMar DeRozan each scored 17 points.

“We have spurts of it. It’s every guy. It’s not one thing or another. The bottom line is as a team we haven’t played well enough.”

“The last month has not been what we wanted,” Ottawa leading scorer Mark Stone said. “We might have to make a few changes to get ourselves back on track.”

Stone leads the Senators in scoring with 25 points (14 goals, 11 assists).

Goaltender Craig Anderson has a save percentage of .895 in 22 games, while backup Mike Condon has a save percentage of .902 in 10 contests.royals_085

Aldridge said it was good to have to “learn how to execute down the stretch with different guys.”

For those who might be looking at the fact that Ertz is already out west with the team as a hint, it’s important to note that the Eagles, who played the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday, remained out west this week to avoid back-to-back cross-country trips. Ertz is listed as questionable, and until there is word of his clearance to return to game action, his status remains uncertain.

Keenan Allen had six catches for 111 yards in his quietest performance during the Bolts’ four-game winning streak. He still set new single-season career highs for receptions and yards during the first half for Los Angeles.

Los Angeles jumped to a 13-0 lead while scoring on its first three drives and getting a first-quarter interception by Kyle Emanuel, but Washington kept it close by forcing two field goals and then getting a 23-yard TD pass to Davis from Cousins, who repeatedly avoided the Chargers’ vaunted pass rush.

The Panthers tied the score during a third-period power play at the 10:11 mark. Huberdeau went down after being cross-checked by Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall, but as he lay on the ice, Huberdeau slipped a pass back across the front of the net to Trocheck, whose quick shot banked into the Detroit net off the outstretched glove of Howard.

San Antonio led by as many as 15 in the first half and 19 in the third quarter before a 12-2 Suns surge to cut the Spurs’ lead to 71-69 on Troy Daniels’ 3-pointer from the corner with 53 seconds left in the period. But Mills made two 3s in the final 10 seconds of the quarter and San Antonio led 79-71 entering the fourth.

Warren rattled in a 3 to punctuate another 12-2 surge that made it tied it 94-94 for the first time since it was 2-2.panthers_033

‘My Cause, My Cleats’: NFL players wearing custom cleats explained in a 2-minute read

Week 13 in the NFL will feature more colors and personality than usual with many players opting to wear custom designed cleats. Usually that’s banned in the NFL and players sometimes show off custom cleats in warmups before switching to a standard pair.

The Saints have been sitting on top of the NFC South, but the loss to the Rams puts them even with the Panthers at 8-3. The Falcons are riding a three-game winning streak and are sitting just one game behind the Panthers and Saints at 7-4.

New Orleans is far from a lock to win the division. And in such a tight NFC race, the loss to the Rams could end up spelling disaster for the Saints’ playoff hopes.

Hayward is normally very efficient from the floor, and he is still shooting 52 percent seven February despite Mondays awful performance.Atlantic Division 6 The Atlantic Division used its second game of the night to assert its dominance, overwhelming the Pacific Division 6 and clinching a spot the All- Challenge championship game. And those considerations must encompass the associations of NFL personnel with the underworld and, most importantly, the backgrounds and business relationships of those who rule professional football: the NFL team owners. He failed to make a three-point attempt for just the second time the last nine , but his efficacy from the foul line helped him reach his average points.

What happened? During the first quarter against Seattle, Seahawks defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson hit Stanton on his knee. Stanton began to walk with a limp, but he managed to play the rest of the game. He finished the game with 273 passing yards and a touchdown.

The Dolphins still have two games left with the Bills

In an NFL season marked by surprises and unexpected rises, no teams are doing it better than New Orleans and L.A. As the Saints keep stomping, the Rams keep romping.

Their hungry fans already feel like they’re in playoff heaven, but here’s a reminder that it’s still only Week 11. For now, how their offenses and defenses have started to thrive, these two NFC upstarts belong in the top five.

Atkinson, Columbus Blue Jackets winger: I grew up with five brothers, and my dad loves cooking. Every night in the summer, we had barbecues. All of my brothers can cook. We watch the Food Channel a lot. I really like “Chopped Junior.” My best recipe is a sauce for salmon. You mix up homemade Italian dressing with a little scoop of Dijon mustard. I put a lot of dill in it.

Unfortunately, those two other teams are Baltimore and Oakland, who were responsible for Miami’s most recent two losses before Carolina. The Dolphins still have two games left with the Bills, and more unfortunately, have also yet to play the Patriots.

Next week comes a break at home against a weak, short-handed Buccaneers offense, and the inept Broncos will visit in three weeks. But the four division games and a date with the high-powered Chiefs in Kansas City in Week 16, there’s not much confidence the defense will discover a quick fix, given how fast everything brokesteelers_015.

on this date I thought my life and my career was over and the fact that I had shamed my family with the media coverage surrounding this situation I vowed to myself on this day (9 yrs ago) that ‘I will be better from this situation.’ What you must learn from this story is this; if you live your life listening to what other people are saying what you should do and not your own, shame on you!

Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant would pull it off almost once a game.

The duo’s favorite improv play started with Durant standing on the block under the basket and Westbrook almost near half court. If the post defender had his back to the ball, Westbrook would lock eyes with Durant and, instead of initiating the original play call, would just lob the ball over the top of the defense for kind of a half-alley-oop. Years of on-court chemistry turned into two quick, easy points.

After falling behind 61-42 with 10:24 to go in the third, the Lakers mounted a furious 30-12 run to cut the deficit to one shortly before the end of the quarter. Throughout this season, the Lakers have somehow managed to keep coming at opponents despite blowing big leads or falling behind big when most young teams might fold. The Lakers can often thank subs like Jordan Clarkson and Randle for that fight.

But Cutler doesn’t play defense, and that unit, not him, is Miami’s biggest obstacle in trying to get back into the AFC playoffs.

In addition to the massive point total, the Dolphins could stop neither pass nor run: Cam Newton threw for 254 yards and Carolina rushed for 294. Add it up, and that’s 548 yards, by far the most Miami has given up this season and a Panthers franchise record.

There were breakdowns in every area. The Dolphins didn’t get any push up front to slow down the run. Their pass rush was nonexistent. The coverage was lost from the get-go, saved only by a few bad Panthers drops. The tackling was poor, highlighted by running back Christian McCaffrey undressing linebacker Kiko Alonso on multiple occasions.

Lewis imitates ‘big brother’ Beckham: The Giants stunned the Chiefs, 12-9, in overtime with the key play coming as wideout Roger Lewis made a stunning diving catch to set up the winning field goal. It was a grab Odell Beckham Jr. would have been proud of, and afterwards Lewis said: “Odell’s like a big brother of mine, but Ido that, too.”nike_steelers_2636

Was it raining down the entire east coast of the United States on Sunday?

Rodriguez really is a baseball nerd and likes to show it, often drawing upon the finely sliced stats that Masterson has given him as well as his own deep knowledge of the game’s history. Ortiz tends to speak from his own experience.

What has gone right: At least for the most part, the 49ers have been competitive, with five losses coming by three points or less.

What has gone wrong: Quarterback play is abysmal, with rookie C.J. Beathard failing to prove an upgrade over the benched Brian Hoyer.

It was pouring in Philadelphia during the Eagles’ win over the 49ers, in New York during the Falcons’ win over the Jets, and again in Landover.

It made for a trio of soggy, mistake-filled games. Fumbles seemed only a moment away on almost every play, and for Washington, the wet conditions caused two of their own. Dallas turned those mistakes into six points, though it should have been more if an Ezekiel Elliott touchdown wasn’t called back on a bogus holding call on Tyron Smith, who had his hands inside the frame of his opponent and drove him into the ground, but was flagged for it.

The better news is that after practicing fully each day, he has cleared all elements of the concussion protocol and has been removed from the team’s pregame injury report. With Martavis Bryant expected to be inactive for Week 8, Smith-Schuster could be the beneficiary.

Markus Wheaton, Chicago Bears, groin, (D), 1 p.m. ET: Wheaton sat out the past two weeks with a groin injury, and it’s looking as if he’ll miss another. Wheaton has not yet returned to practice so it is not clear why his status was upgraded, albeit ever so slightly, from being ruled out in advance. He has been rehabbing for three weeks and is perhaps somewhat closer to a return to practice. The Bears have a bye in Week 9, so the soonest Wheaton would take the field again, presuming he sits Sunday, is Week 10.

We have our first sign of insanity in Ames with a “We Want Bama” sign held up by a Cyclones fan in the stands

Belichick loves high second-round picks, which have proved to be the most valuable selections of the draft in terms of surplus value. He has drafted players such as Eugene Wilson and Patrick Chung at the top of the second round in years past, but Belichick also loves trading down and around the draft, and a high second-round pick gives him plenty of options.

Wimbush is on a roll, y’all. He’s moving and throwing with confidence, and he’s starting to find holes in this NC State defense. After an 11-yard pass to Smythe, he gets his second passing touchdown to give the Irish their first lead of the game at 21-14. This time, it’s Kevin Stepherson who is on the receiving end of an 11-yard pass.

How long until Nick Saban informs his team that the Cyclones don’t respect the Crimson Tide?

Also worth noting: The Bears acquired wide receiver Dontrelle Inman from the Chargers in exchange for a 2018 seventh-round draft pick, upgrading their depth at the position. Inman’s first practice wasn’t until Friday, and it’s unclear whether he’ll be on the field Sunday. Per’s Jeff Dickerson, coach John Fox did say Inman will travel with the team to New Orleans.

What’s next: It’s all about next season already with upgrades at quarterback and cornerback a must. In the meantime, the 49ers will try to avoid becoming only the second team ever to finish 0-16.

In a sense, Ortiz’s openness made him an ideal replacement for Rose, who also came across as real, although in a different, more rumpled way. Ortiz is an equally good counterpoint to Rodriguez, who even in his post-career renaissance still never quite seems to be entirely genuine, although it is certainly possible that Alex Rodriguez has been playing the role of Alex Rodriguez for so long that it has become indistinguishable from his true identity.

Jerick McKinnon (1.7 OTD) has found the end zone on four of his 106 looks this season.

That includes four of 84 looks (1.6 OTD) in four games since Dalvin Cook went down for the season. During those four games, McKinnon has scraped together two carries inside the opponent’s 5-yard line. That’s equal to Latavius Murray’s total. Murray sports a 1.3 OTD since Cook has been out but has scored only one touchdown.

Cousins can compartmentalize the contract pretty well. He knows the $43.9 million he’ll have made by the end of this year in 2016 and 2017 alone sets up him and his family (he and wife Julie had their first child, Cooper, Friday night) for life, so he doesn’t fret about the money—just the job. He knows he’ll be in demand by Washington and a couple of other teams if he hits the open market next March. So what’s there’s to worry about?

Well, playing in Kansas City, for one. “I’ve never played there, and I’ve wanted to,” he said. “Kansas City’s got an iconic stadium. I’d like to play at all of them—but it’s hard, because they keep building new stadiums.”

Twenty-one points are the most the Gators have allowed in the first quarter since 2011 vs. powerhouse Furman. Florida trailed 22-7 after the first quarter of that game but ended up winning 54-32. Sorry, Jim McElwain, John Brantley isn’t walking through that door.

Think we forgot about our friends in Ames, Iowa? Please. Matt Campbell is a star on the rise and has brought big-boy football to Cyclones country.

He had played high school ball 25 miles outside of Bloomington, then hopped on Indiana 37 North to join Bob Knight for four years. Fans of Bedford North Lawrence High School used to purchase season tickets for Bedford’s opponents just to make sure they bore witness to Bailey’s every act of Indiana basketball excellence.

If we’re being blunt about it, the talent around Kizer isn’t great.

“What’s up, ladies! It’s gonna be a great day, great day, great day!” Alex Rodriguez calls out to the hair, makeup and wardrobe department as he sweeps into Fox’s production trailer, parked just beyond Dodger Stadium’s centerfield fence, five hours before Game 2 of the World Series on Oct. 25. The collar of his ironed golf shirt is popped, his hair is gelled and his teeth are very white. Fox researcher Anthony Masterson passes Rodriguez a thick packet of notes and stats as he walks by—a practiced handoff, by now.

In a nutshell, my sense is that their leniency with Beckham—McAdoo publicly stuck up for Beckham following his dog-peeing celebration, which came just six days after the coach publicly called out Eli Manning for a costly delay-of-game flag—has undercut his ability to lead the group.

Fuller caught two touchdown passes and five passes overall on eight targets, resulting in 29.5 PPR and 24.5 non-PPR fantasy points. It gave him a streak of four consecutive games with a touchdown to begin his season, for a total of seven touchdowns on only 13 total catches and 22 total targets.

CR: The player’s “consistency rating,” which is calculated as his weekly standard deviation divided by his PPR fantasy points per game average.

“They had plenty of talent, but when you’re around him—the stuff he does, how he acts—it’s like, Oh my god, I’d love to play with this,” Burkhardt says. “He takes every bit of pressure off. He’s motivating. He gets on a point, he drives it home, he’s passionate, he laughs.”

Browns give Kizer a break. Hue Jackson’s call to go with Kevin Hogan this week might look scattershot on the surface, but it’s being done with good reason. What the staff saw last week, and the last couple weeks, was a rookie quarterback who was clearly carrying the burden of all the bumps he hit in his first five NFL games.

Kamara hasn’t been targeted while inside the opponent’s 12-yard line but Ingram has twice.

Mark Ingram (5.0 OTD) has scored four touchdowns, and Alvin Kamara (2.1 OTD) has three this season, but the usage of both players suggests the scoring gap should be wider. Ingram has carried the ball seven times inside the opponent’s 5-yard line, whereas Kamara has only twice.

“That’s the thing he’s learned, that’s the thing I think he appreciates. I mean, he had a huge day [in Detroit], but it wasn’t like he had to sit there and run the ball. It wasn’t like he had to sit there in the pocket and hold, hold, hold. The ball came out.”

Muhlbach started long-snapping as a young high-schooler in Lufkin, Texas, to have something to do while his ride home, the punter on the football team, practiced after the regular practice.

Great story, great factoid on a player no one notices but who’s really good at his job. That, folks, is how to write a great feature story on a guy no one knows.

Sign of the Times Story of the Week: From Scooby Axson of Sports Illustrated, a former soldier in the Army. He favors players doing what they want during the national anthem. It’s a logical piece. Axson writes, “I don’t feel disrespected if a person chooses not to stand for the national anthem. I fought for your ability to make that choice. What is disrespectful is the use of the great military as the basis to deny some citizens freedom of expression.”

Michael Thomas, knee, and Willie Snead, hamstring, New Orleans Saints, 1 p.m. ET: The Saints might have a plethora of pass-catchers, but when the No. 1 wide receiver shows up as a surprise “did not practice” on the injury report, as Thomas did Wednesday, it can cause a slight panic. Thankfully, Thomas’ injury was not serious, as coach Sean Payton hinted at when he said he did not anticipate it being a long-term issue.
